The publishing of this two volume book celebrates twelve years of work between respected Cahuilla elder, Katherine Siva Sauvel, Ph.D. and ethno-linguist Eric Elliott Ph.D. Malki-Ballena Press is especially proud to be able to present these books in the year of Malki Museum’s 40th Anniversary. Dr. Sauvel has been acting President of the Malki Museum Board of Directors since it was established in 1964 and she is also President of the Malki Press Editorial Board. Dr. Sauvel and Dr. Elliott have collaborated to make a collection of her memoirs and recollected cultural traditions as they were passed down to her. The book is also unique in that it is presented in both Dr. Sauvel’s native Cahuilla and English together. She has made it her life’s work to preserve her native culture and heritage, and this book is the culmination of many years of sharing those things. It is both a great resource on Cahuilla language and culture, and also the story of an extraordinary woman.
