Dorothy Ramon was born on January 22, 1909 on the Morongo Indian Reservation, a windswept tract of land in rural Riverside County, wedged between Mount San Jacinto and Mount San Gorgonio. In the Ramon household everyone spoke Serrano: both of Mrs. Ramon’s parents were native speakers of the language. Linguist Eric Elliott worked for more than 12 years with Mrs. Ramon, who was well into her 80s when she began documenting her language and culture. Their work culminated in the publication in 2000 of this fascinating 894-page bilingual series of culturally significant texts and memoirs that tell an enduring story of the Serrano people.
